BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance with Foundation Year

This full-time, four-year blended BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance degree includes a foundation year. It is designed for students who want to build academic confidence before moving into degree-level accounting and finance study. You will study financial and management accounting, financial reporting, corporate finance, taxation, audit, investment and financial technology. The course may suit adults returning to education who are interested in accounting, financial services or business finance.

About this course

This four-year blended degree begins with a foundation year designed to help you prepare for undergraduate study. It covers academic study skills, the business environment, leadership and planning for your future, alongside an investigation and innovation project.

The degree then develops accounting and finance knowledge through financial accounting, management accounting, business economics, finance and quantitative methods. As you progress, you will study financial reporting, financial markets, performance management, corporate and business law, taxation, audit and assurance, and corporate financial management.

You will also explore areas including financial technology, security analysis and valuation, international finance, investment and portfolio management, and financial data analysis. Practical activities include working with financial statements and developing applied financial skills. The final-stage financial management project gives you an opportunity to bring together your learning in a substantial piece of work.

Assessment

Assessment methods include exams, assignments, board presentations, consultancy projects and company-based knowledge-transfer projects. You may also complete client reports, an investor or broker memo, and manage an individual equity portfolio.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a minimum of 45 Level 3 credits completed within the last three years, or an equivalent qualification.

If you do not meet the qualification requirement, you may be considered with at least two years of professional work experience, evidenced by a CV and reference.

You will also need to provide a personal statement of 350–550 words, or attend an interview, demonstrating your ability to study on the programme.

English language requirements

IELTS 6.0 overall, with no component below 5.5; TOEFL iBT 80; or an equivalent English language qualification.

Careers

This course may support progression into roles such as financial accountant, management accountant, auditor, financial adviser, financial planner, trader, broker, financial agent or corporate treasury manager. It may also be relevant to work in banking or insurance.
