BSc (Hons) Computer Science

BSc (Hons) Computer Science is a degree focused on programming, software engineering, databases, computer systems and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. You will develop practical and analytical computing skills through programming, application development, database work, UX design and a final project. It may suit people seeking to move into IT or technology-focused roles, including those returning to study through a foundation-year route.

About this course

This Computer Science degree develops the technical and practical knowledge needed to understand, build and manage software-based systems. You will study programming in Python and Java, data structures, computer systems, databases and object-oriented development, alongside the principles behind algorithms, computational complexity, networks and operating systems.

The course also examines current areas of computing including artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, data science and evolutionary algorithms. You will consider how software is designed and delivered through software engineering approaches such as Agile, Scrum and Extreme Programming, while building skills in application development, database management and user interface design.

As you progress, you will undertake research methods and project management for computing and complete a final dissertation project. The course may suit adults returning to education who want a structured route into technical computing, software development or wider IT work.

A three-year full-time route is available. A four-year route with a foundation year is also available in blended mode, providing an additional preparation year before degree-level study.

Assessment

Assessment methods include quizzes, class exercises, portfolios, group work, presentations and reflective assignments.

Entry requirements

Applicants need 112 UCAS Tariff points from three A Levels or an equivalent qualification. Typical offers include BBC at A Level or DMM in a BTEC qualification.

You must have Grade C or 4 or above in GCSE English Language and Maths, or an equivalent qualification.

A Grade C at A Level, or an equivalent qualification, is also required in Computing or IT, a science, Mathematics, or a technology subject.
