BSc (Hons) Computing with Foundation Year
This blended, full-time BSc (Hons) Computing with Foundation Year is a four-year course for students who want to develop computing knowledge before progressing to degree-level study. It covers programming, web development, databases, networking, cloud computing, cybersecurity, data analytics and IT project work. It may suit adults returning to education who want a structured route into a broad range of computing subjects.
About this course
This four-year blended degree includes a foundation year designed to build the academic, problem-solving and STEM skills needed for undergraduate computing study. You will then develop knowledge across programming, systems, databases, networking and web technologies.
The course covers programming in Java, Python and PHP, alongside web development using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. You will study operating systems, databases including MySQL, computer networking, human-computer interaction, systems analysis and design, and IT project management.
As you progress, you will explore cloud and distributed computing, information security management, data analytics, visualisation and data mining. The course also considers digital business, technology entrepreneurship, and the ethical, quality and sustainability issues involved in technological environments. A computing project provides an opportunity to bring together your technical and project skills.

Foundation year modules include Preparing for Success as a STEM Student, Fundamentals of STEM, Advancing Your Academic Skills in STEM, Problem Solving and Programming, Planning for Success as a STEM Student and Graduate, and a STEM Project.
Later modules include Introduction to Academic Skills and Professional Development, Introduction to Operating Systems & Security, Introduction to Databases, Introduction to Programming, Introduction to Web Authoring and Introduction to Networking.
You will also study Human Computer Interaction, Data Analytics and Visualisation, IT Project Management, Systems Analysis and Design, Advanced Databases, Object Oriented Programming, Digital Business, Ethics, Quality and Sustainability in Technological Environments, Data Mining, Distributed & Cloud Computing, Information Security Management, Web Application Development, Technology Entrepreneurship and a Computing Project.

Assessment
Assessment includes time-controlled assessments and hands-on activities.
Entry requirements
You will need one of the following:
- A minimum of 45 Level 3 credits completed within the last three years, or an equivalent qualification. - At least two years of professional work experience, supported by a CV and reference. Applications may be considered on this basis.
A personal statement of 350–550 words is required. You may also be invited to attend an interview.
English language requirements
IELTS 6.0 overall, with no component below 5.5; TOEFL iBT 80; or an equivalent qualification.
