BSc (Hons) Computing with Foundation Year
BSc (Hons) Computing with Foundation Year is a four-year full-time course that begins with a preparatory year before progressing to degree-level computing study. It covers programming, databases, software development, information security, networks, cyber security and IT project management. The foundation year may be particularly useful if you are returning to study or need to strengthen your academic and computing skills first.
About this course
This four-year full-time computing degree includes a foundation year designed to build the academic, communication and technical skills needed for degree-level study. It may suit adults returning to education, including those who want a structured introduction before moving into core computing subjects.
The course develops knowledge of programming, database management, software development, information security, networking and cyber security. You will also consider how computer-based systems are designed and managed within organisations, including business intelligence, enterprise systems and IT project and product management.
As the course progresses, you will apply technical and professional skills through practical work, research and a major computing project. Ethical practice, sustainability and professional development are also part of the curriculum.

Assessment
Assessment methods include written assignments, laboratory reports, practical activities, presentations, group work, research projects and reflective writing.
Entry requirements
Standard entry normally requires 96 UCAS Tariff points from three A Levels or an equivalent qualification, such as CCC at A Level. Accepted alternatives include the Irish Leaving Certificate (BBCCC), Scottish Highers (BBCCC), a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at DMM in a related subject, or the International Baccalaureate Diploma with 24 points.
You also need at least three GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including English and Maths.
For foundation-year entry, a minimum of 40 UCAS Tariff points is required. Applicants who meet either the foundation or standard entry criteria but have been out of study for five years must pass an academic interview.
Level 3 entry may be considered if you do not meet the usual requirements but can demonstrate the knowledge, skills and potential to benefit from the course, for example through relevant work experience and professional development.
For non-standard mature entry (age 21+), you need an Ofqual-recognised academic Level 3 qualification, or a Level 2 qualification in the intended field plus work experience in that field gained within the last five years. An academic interview is required.
English language requirements
IELTS Academic 6.0 or an equivalent English language qualification.

This course may support progression into analyst or management roles across information systems, computer systems, security, business and data. Possible technical roles include network administrator, network engineer, network manager, database administrator, UI/UX designer, web developer, software developer, apps developer, technical sales or support engineer, hardware engineer and software engineer.
