About this course
This four-year BSc (Hons) degree includes a foundation year designed to help you prepare for undergraduate study. It introduces academic writing, communication and research skills alongside the professional foundations of health and social care.
As the course progresses, you will examine health and wellbeing across communities and throughout the life course. Topics include the biological, psychological and social factors affecting health, culture and society, ethics, policy, safeguarding, healthy ageing, mental health and social justice.
You will also learn to use, question and apply research evidence in health and social care practice. Later study covers quality management, leadership, work-based learning and a capstone project, helping you bring together your learning around an area of interest.
What you will study
The foundation year covers Academic Writing Skills for Success, Care, Compassion and Communication in Health and Social Care, an introduction to health and social care, community health and wellbeing, and professional foundations.
You will then study biological, psychological and social determinants of health across the life course; communication and ethics; culture and society in health; health and social care policy and practice; and using research and evidence.
Later modules include Applied Research in Practice, Equality and Social Justice in Health and Social Care, professional development through work-based learning, healthy ageing, mental health and wellbeing, and safeguarding children and adults.
The final stage includes challenging evidence, evaluating and managing quality, leadership and management, social justice and vulnerability, and a capstone project.

Assessment
Assessment includes essays, reports, individual and group presentations, group debates, small-group projects and real-life simulations.
Entry requirements
Applicants must be aged 18 or over.
You will normally need a Level 3 qualification equivalent to 60 credits or 80 UCAS Tariff points, plus five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including English, or equivalent qualifications.
Applicants complete an interview assessment covering listening, speaking and writing.
If you are aged 21 or over and do not meet the standard entry requirements, you may still be considered if you can demonstrate commitment to studying the subject and provide evidence of relevant academic, professional or vocational experience.

This degree may support progression into roles across healthcare, social care, public, private and voluntary-sector services. Possible areas include care coordination, community support, health improvement, social care management, local authority casework, public health and housing support.
