This BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling degree explores core psychological theory alongside counselling approaches, mental health and therapeutic practice. About this course
This degree combines the study of psychology with counselling theory and practice. It examines how people think, develop, behave and relate to others, while introducing the skills used to support people through counselling conversations and therapeutic processes.
You will study major areas of psychology, including social, cognitive, biological and developmental psychology. The course also develops research capability through qualitative and quantitative methods, helping you to understand, evaluate and carry out psychological research.
Counselling-focused study covers approaches to counselling psychology, core counselling skills, mental health and illness, psychological assessment and formulation, and the management of the therapeutic process. This may suit adults who want to build a foundation in psychological theory alongside an understanding of wellbeing and helping relationships.
The course is available full-time over three years through blended study, or part-time online over three years or more.

Assessment
Assessment methods include individual reports, case study analyses, role-play activities, group presentations, reflective assignments and independent work.
Entry requirements
Academic entry requires two GCE A-level subjects, or an equivalent qualification, plus GCSE passes at grade C or above in three subjects, or equivalent qualifications.
For non-standard entry, applicants may be considered with 12 months of relevant work experience demonstrating critical thinking and analytical skills. A CV and references are required. Applicants must also have GCSE passes at grade C or above in three subjects, or equivalent qualifications, and should provide a CV where relevant.
All applicants must submit a 350–500 word personal statement explaining their motivation to study, relevant experience and qualifications, and references. Applicants without GCSE Mathematics or an equivalent are strongly encouraged to complete the Everyday Maths for Social Sciences module.
English language requirements
IELTS 6.0 overall, with no element below 5.5; or TOEFL iBT 80. Evidence of previous study taught in English, such as a letter confirming English was the medium of instruction, may also be accepted.
Careers
This course may support progression into roles such as counsellor, support worker, mental health professional, human resource manager, careers adviser or work in social care. Graduates may also explore opportunities in nursing, social work, policing, journalism, marketing or advertising, and in settings including health services, schools, charities, youth and community services, and private practice. Further training may be required for regulated professions, including counselling psychology.
