BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling with Foundation Year
This four-year, full-time blended degree combines psychology with counselling psychology and includes a foundation year. It may suit students returning to education or those who want to build university-level study skills before progressing to the degree. You will explore psychological theory, research methods, mental health, wellbeing and counselling practice, including core skills training and role-play sessions.
About this course
This four-year blended BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling includes a foundation year for students who would benefit from preparation before beginning degree-level psychology study. The foundation stage develops academic skills, university study habits and an understanding of the social world, social justice and future planning.
The psychology element examines how people think, develop, behave and relate to one another. You will study social, developmental, biological and cognitive psychology, alongside personality, intelligence and positive psychology. Research training covers both qualitative and quantitative methods, helping you understand, evaluate and carry out psychological research.
The counselling focus introduces key approaches to counselling psychology and develops core counselling skills through activities including role-play sessions. Later study considers psychological assessment and formulation, mental health and illness, health and wellbeing, and how to manage the therapeutic process. You will also complete a counselling research project.
The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Assessment
Assessment includes role-play sessions, supporting the development and practice of core counselling skills.
Entry requirements
Applicants need a minimum of 45 Level 3 credits completed within the last three years, or an equivalent qualification.
Those who do not meet the qualification requirement may be considered with at least two years of professional work experience, supported by a CV and reference.
Applicants must also provide a personal statement of 350–550 words, or attend an interview, to demonstrate their ability to study on the programme.
English language requirements
IELTS 6.0 overall, with no element below 5.5; TOEFL iBT 80; or an equivalent qualification. Evidence of previous study in English, such as a letter confirming English as the medium of instruction, may also be accepted.
Careers
The course may support progression into roles or further training in counselling, applied psychology, mental health support, nursing, social work and human resources. Other possible directions include careers advice, marketing and advertising, journalism or policing. Further qualifications may be needed for regulated professions, including counselling psychologist roles.
