About this course
This two-year, full-time CertHE includes a foundation year designed to build the academic, digital and communication skills needed for higher-level study in health and social care. It may suit adults returning to education, including those who want a structured introduction before moving into Level 4 study.
You will examine how health and social care services are shaped by political, social and legal factors. Topics include safeguarding, care policy and law, health and wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, sustainability, contemporary health issues and the use of technology in the sector.
The course also develops professional skills for working with others. You will consider partnership working, communication and interpersonal practice, research, and employability, alongside the social factors that influence health and illness.
What you will study
The foundation year introduces the context of health and social care, study skills, information technology, communication and interpersonal skills, and professional development.
At CertHE level, you will study sociology of health and illness; partnership working; safeguarding in care; care policy and law; health and wellbeing; contemporary health issues; and introductory research.
Across the course, you will also explore diversity and inclusion, sustainability and net zero, employability, and the effects of technology and the fourth industrial revolution on health and social care practice.

Entry requirements
Applicants need five GCSE passes or a NARIC-confirmed equivalent.
Applicants are assessed through an interview covering listening, speaking and reading, and through a personal statement assessing writing.
Applicants without standard qualifications may be considered where they can demonstrate substantial relevant work experience, the ability to pass examinations, an independent employment reference and appropriate English proficiency.
English language requirements
Formal evidence of English is not required for UK nationals or qualifying EU applicants under the applicable admissions criteria.
Applicants whose first language is not English need English at CEFR Level B1. For mature applicants entering at Level 4 or above, CEFR Level B2 is required. Mature applicants entering at Level 3 require CEFR Level B1, demonstrated through an independent external examination.

The course may support progression into health and social care settings, including supervisory or management roles as experience and any further requirements allow.
