Health and Social Care BSc (Hons)
This full-time Health and Social Care degree explores the systems, knowledge and professional practice involved in supporting health and wellbeing across care settings. It may suit adults returning to education who want to develop an understanding of safeguarding, mental health, health promotion, care delivery and healthcare management. Study options include a three-year degree or a four-year route with a foundation year.
About this course
This BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care course examines how health and care services are organised, delivered and improved. You will build knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, lifecycle development, health and safety, safeguarding, mental health and wellbeing, and health promotion.
The course also considers the professional responsibilities involved in care work. Topics include care planning, healthcare communication, professional boundaries, ethics, vulnerability and empowerment. You will explore how factors such as diversity, sustainability, globalisation and risk can affect healthcare practice.
As you progress, you will compare healthcare systems and study leadership, change management, healthcare management, research and data analysis. The course concludes with an undergraduate major project in healthcare. A four-year full-time route with a foundation year is also available for students who would benefit from additional preparation before beginning degree-level study.

The foundation year includes Academic and Study Skills, Data and Digital Skills, Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care, Foundations of Healthcare, and Fundamentals of Human Anatomy and Physiology.
Degree-level study covers Academic and Professional Skills; The Health and Social Care Professional; Health and Safety in Care Settings; Lifecycle Development; Principles and Practice of Safeguarding; Mental Health and Wellbeing; and Health Promotion.
Later topics include Sustainability in Career Development, Contemporary Issues in Healthcare, Comparative Healthcare Systems, Leadership and Change Management, and an Undergraduate Major Project in Healthcare.

Assessment
Assessment methods include coursework, group and activity-based assignments, exams and unseen examinations. You may also complete reflective work, written management reports, health-promotion events, care-delivery analyses, journal-article evaluations, problem-solving activities, projects and presentations.
Entry requirements
Applicants typically need 96 UCAS Tariff points from three A levels, for example BCC.
Other accepted qualifications include the Irish Leaving Certificate at BBCCC, Scottish Highers at BBCCC, a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at DMM in a business-related subject, or the International Baccalaureate Diploma with 24 points.
You also need at least three GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including English and Maths.
International applicants may be considered with GCE A levels from a recognised UK examination board, an International Baccalaureate Diploma with at least 24 points, a recognised university foundation course, or relevant qualifications gained in their home country.
For mature applicants, appropriate relevant work experience may be considered.
English language requirements
IELTS Academic 6.0, or an equivalent recognised English-language qualification.
