LLB (Hons) Law

About this course

This LLB (Hons) Law degree develops knowledge of the English legal system alongside core areas of law, including public law, tort, criminal law, contract law, land law, equity and trusts. You will also consider civil liberties, dispute resolution, business law and the relationship between technology, innovation and the law.

The course combines legal knowledge with practical skills. These include legal research, advocacy, drafting and applying legal principles to problems. Later study may include options in areas such as employment law, family law, international commercial law, public international law, property practice and legal research.

At Level 6, the course structure includes options connected with solicitors’ professional practice and SQE1 preparation. These options form part of the degree and do not in themselves qualify you as a solicitor. The course is available in blended study over three years, or online over three years or more.

What you will study

Core study includes English Legal System and Skills, Public Law, Tort 1 and 2, Crime 1 and 2, Civil Liberties in Practice, Contract Law, Land Law and Practical Skills, and Equity, Trusts and Wills.

Further topics include Dispute Resolution, Technology, Innovation and the Law, Business Law and Practice, Solicitors Professional Practice, Property Practice and EU Law. Available later areas include Placement and Pro Bono, Employment Law, International Commercial Law, Family Law, Public International Law, a Legal Research Project and a Legal Dissertation.

Modules

Assessment

Assessment methods include multiple-choice examinations, advocacy, portfolios, drafting exercises and coursework.

Entry requirements

You will normally need three GCE A levels or equivalent, plus four GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent), including GCSE English.

Alternative entry may be available through completion of a recognised Access programme or equivalent, such as an LLB (Hons) Law with Foundation Year.

For non-standard entry, you will need a personal statement showing your ability to study the course, references, and evidence of relevant experience and/or previous qualifications.

English language requirements

English language evidence may include IELTS 6.0, with no element below 5.5; TOEFL iBT 80; or evidence of previous study in English, such as a letter confirming English as the medium of instruction.

Careers

The course may support progression into legal roles such as solicitor, barrister, paralegal, legal executive or legal secretary. It may also be relevant to work in journalism, policing, politics, teaching and academia, tax consultancy, or business consultancy.
