About this course

This LLB Law degree provides a structured introduction to the English and Welsh legal system and the main areas of substantive law. You will develop legal research, legal writing, case analysis and statutory interpretation skills, learning how to construct and communicate legal arguments clearly.

Core study includes public and EU law, contract law, criminal law, land law, tort, business law, human rights, equity and trusts, and access to justice. The course also considers law in commercial, international and digital contexts, including artificial intelligence literacy, legal technology and the changing delivery of legal services.

Practical and independent learning are built into the course through areas such as legal method, research skills, an extended essay and a student law clinic. Depending on the modules available, you may also explore real estate, criminal litigation and evidence, wills and succession, employment law, intellectual property, family law, mental health and mental capacity, civil dispute resolution, and international commercial law.

The standard full-time route lasts three years. Four-year foundation year routes are also available, including a blended study option. A foundation year can provide preparation in academic, digital and research skills before degree-level law study.

What you will study

You will study legal method and skills, including legal research, OSCOLA referencing, interpreting cases and legislation, legal argument, and digital and research skills.

Key law subjects include the English and Welsh legal system; public and EU law; contract law; criminal law and criminal justice; land law; tort; business law; human rights; real estate; equity and trusts; and access to justice and legal services.

The course also addresses law in a global and digital context, with topics including artificial intelligence literacy and regulation, legal technology, sustainability, international commercial law and practising law in the digital world. Modules may include a student law clinic and an extended essay.

The foundation year includes communication skills, digital and research skills, sustainability and society, a foundation year project, skills for higher education, and introductory concepts in law, business, computer science, criminology and psychology.

Assessment

Assessment methods include exams, essays, a project report, portfolios, oral presentations and mock assessments.

Entry requirements

For the standard degree route, applicants need one of the following: A levels at BBB; a BTEC at DDM; or 120 UCAS Tariff points from three A levels or an equivalent qualification. GCSE English Language at grade C/4 or above, or an equivalent qualification, is also required.

Entry requirements for the Foundation Year and Foundation Year (Blended) routes differ from those listed above.

Careers

An LLB may support progression towards legal careers such as solicitor, barrister or paralegal, subject to any further professional training and requirements. It may also be relevant to roles in in-house law, business, finance, human resources, company secretarial work, politics, journalism and other commercial areas.
