About this course
This LLM examines family law in the UK, with attention to the legal, social, economic and political factors that shape family relationships and disputes. It is suited to graduates who want to develop specialist knowledge of issues affecting couples, parents, children and families.
You will consider divorce and dissolution, parenthood, private and public children law, adoption, cohabitation and domestic abuse. The course also explores family law theories, concepts and principles, helping you analyse how the law operates in practice.
Alongside substantive legal study, you will develop research skills for family law and consider the role of legal technology. The course concludes with a substantial dissertation, allowing you to investigate a family law topic in depth.

Topics include family law in practice; divorce and dissolution; parenthood; private and public children law; adoptions; cohabitation; and domestic abuse. You will also examine family law in the context of economics and politics, UK family law theories and principles, legal technology, and research methods in family law.

Assessment
Assessment includes a three-hour unseen written examination, a 4,500-word coursework assignment and a 15,000-word dissertation thesis in family law.

Applicants need a minimum second-class honours degree.
