LLM Investment Regulation

This LLM focuses on the laws, agreements and disputes involved in the regulation of investment across borders. It covers foreign direct investment, investment contracts, investor protections and compensation. It may suit law graduates who want to build specialist knowledge of investment law, financial regulation and dispute settlement. Full-time, part-time and online study options are available.

About this course

This LLM examines the legal framework governing investment regulation, with particular attention to foreign direct investment and the agreements that shape relations between investors and states. You will consider bilateral, regional and multilateral investment agreements, as well as investment contracts and the protections they may contain.

Key legal principles include fair and equitable treatment, full protection and security, umbrella clauses and compensation. The course also considers dispute settlement, public-interest questions, and the economic and political factors that influence investment regulation.

Alongside specialist legal study, you will develop research skills through legal technology research methods training and complete a substantial dissertation in investment regulation law.

What you will study

You will study investment regulation law, including foreign direct investment; bilateral, regional and multilateral investment agreements; and investment contracts.

The course covers investor protections such as fair and equitable treatment, full protection and security, umbrella clauses and compensation. You will also examine dispute settlement, public-interest issues, and the economics and politics of investment regulation.

Modules include Investment Regulation Law, Research Methods Training, and a Dissertation in Investment Regulation Law. Research methods training includes legal technology research methods.

Assessment

Assessment includes a three-hour unseen written examination, a 4,500-word coursework assignment and a 15,000-word thesis.

Entry requirements

A minimum second-class honours degree is required.
