LLM Journalism and the Law

This LLM focuses on the legal issues that affect journalism and media reporting. It may suit graduates interested in media law, legal reporting, regulation or compliance. The course covers court reporting, reporting restrictions, open justice, defamation, privacy and the protection of journalistic sources, with research methods training and a dissertation.

About this course

This LLM examines the relationship between journalism, the media and the legal system. It considers how law and legal issues are represented in the media, alongside the legal and regulatory principles that govern reporting.

You will explore reporting of court proceedings, reporting restrictions and open justice, as well as the protection of journalists’ sources and reporting involving national security. The course also develops knowledge of media law, including defamation and privacy.

Research methods training supports independent legal research. You will apply this learning through elective study and a dissertation in Journalism and the Law. Full-time, part-time and online study options are available.

Assessment

Assessment includes a three-hour unseen written examination, a coursework assignment and submission of a thesis.

Entry requirements

A minimum second-class honours degree is required.
