About this course
This LLM focuses on mediation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR), examining ways to resolve disputes outside, or alongside, formal court proceedings. You will consider mediation, arbitration and negotiation, and learn how to identify an appropriate ADR process for different situations.
The course combines legal principles with practical problem-solving. It explores the mediator’s role, the skills and qualities needed for effective mediation, the structure of a mediation, and mediation advocacy. You will also develop research skills for investigating issues relevant to client needs and producing critically informed legal analysis.
Alongside specialist ADR study, the course covers civil and criminal litigation, helping you place alternative processes in the wider context of dispute resolution. A dissertation allows you to undertake sustained research in a mediation or ADR topic of your choice.

You will study mediation, arbitration, commercial arbitration and negotiation. Topics include selecting the appropriate form of ADR, evaluating legal principles and practical solutions, researching client-focused issues, the role of the mediator, the structure of mediation, and mediation advocacy.

Assessment
Assessment includes a three-hour unseen written examination, a 4,500-word coursework assignment and a thesis.
