Master of Public Health (MPH)
This Master of Public Health (MPH) is a postgraduate course focused on improving and protecting the health of populations. It covers health inequalities, public health interventions, health protection, policy, research and healthcare data. It may suit people with relevant degree-level study and experience who want to develop their understanding of population health, service development and evidence-based public health practice.
About this course
The Master of Public Health (MPH) examines how health is shaped across populations and how public health services can prevent disease, reduce inequalities and improve wellbeing. It considers the social, economic, environmental and political determinants of health, alongside the organisation and delivery of health and social care.
You will study health protection, health improvement and service development, using research, healthcare data and evidence to inform decisions. The course also addresses communicable diseases, environmental hazards, emergency planning, surveillance systems and health risk communication.
Alongside public health policy and interventions, you will consider global health, healthcare systems, sustainability, ethical practice, inclusive care and DEIA in public health. A major project allows you to investigate a public health issue in depth.

Assessment
Assessment may include written coursework, oral presentations, examinations, in-class tests, online quizzes, practical projects and reflective work. You will also complete a major project or dissertation.
Entry requirements
Applicants typically need a UK honours degree with at least a lower second-class (2:2) classification, plus relevant experience. Relevant overseas qualifications may also be considered.
If you do not hold the required grades, your application may still be considered where you can demonstrate suitable life or work skills.
English language requirements
You will need to have previously studied in English and demonstrate sufficient English language ability for postgraduate study, or hold an IELTS score of 6.5 or above, or an accepted equivalent.
Careers
This course may support progression into roles such as public health analyst, health promotion specialist, policy adviser or global health consultant. It may also be relevant to work with local authorities, NHS public health teams, charities and NGOs, international organisations, policy think tanks, and academic or research institutions. Some graduates may use the course as a basis for independent public health consultancy.
