MLaw Solicitors' Practice (Integrated Master's)
This full-time, four-year MLaw is an integrated master's course for students planning to work towards qualification as a solicitor in England and Wales. About this course
This four-year integrated MLaw combines the academic study of law with preparation for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). The first three years develop knowledge of the main areas of English and Welsh law, while the final year focuses on SQE1 and SQE2 preparation and applied legal practice.
You will build legal research, writing, argument and problem-solving skills alongside practical abilities such as client interviewing, advocacy, negotiation and legal drafting. The course also considers access to justice, legal services, legal technology and the role of AI literacy in professional practice.
In the later stages of the course, you will study areas relevant to legal practice, including civil dispute resolution, criminal litigation and evidence, real estate, and wills and succession. A research project allows you to investigate a legal topic in depth. Optional subjects may include employment law, intellectual property, international commercial law, family law, and mental health and mental capacity.
The course is designed for students aiming to prepare for the SQE route to becoming a solicitor. It includes SQE1 and SQE2 preparation, but passing the SQE and completing qualifying work experience remain separate requirements for solicitor qualification.
What you will study
Year 1 introduces the legal system of England and Wales, legal method and skills, public and EU law, contract law, criminal law, academic development, and AI literacy for future legal professionals.
Further study covers land law, tort, business and company law, access to justice and legal services, real estate, and equity and trusts. You will also examine current legal issues and the relationship between law and society.
The practice-focused part of the course includes civil dispute resolution, including alternative dispute resolution processes such as negotiation, mediation, arbitration and conciliation; criminal litigation and evidence; wills and succession; legal technology; and a legal advice clinic. SQE1 and SQE2 preparation is included, alongside a research project or practice-area research report.
Optional study may include employment law, intellectual property, international commercial law, family law, mental health and mental capacity, Canadian constitutional law, and foundations of Canadian law.

Assessment
Assessment methods include exams, essays, a project report, portfolios, oral presentations, mock assessments, multiple-choice assessments, and other written and oral tasks.
