MSc Computing and Cybersecurity

This MSc develops computing and cybersecurity knowledge across software development, data management, artificial intelligence, network security and penetration testing. It may suit graduates from any academic background who want to build practical and strategic skills for work in cybersecurity or related computing roles. Full-time, part-time and flexible study options are available, with course duration ranging from 12 to 24 months.

About this course

This MSc Computing and Cybersecurity combines core computing knowledge with practical and strategic approaches to protecting systems, networks and data. It is designed for graduates from any subject who want to develop skills in software development, data management, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

You will work with Python and GitHub, explore secure data structures, encryption and access control, and learn to manage relational, NoSQL, graph and hierarchical databases. The course also covers machine learning, intelligent agents, cloud-based database management and network security.

Cybersecurity study includes Linux and web server configuration, cloud security, penetration testing, threat modelling, cryptographic tools, user authentication and intrusion prevention. You will also consider the governance side of security, including risk management, incident management, forensic readiness, GDPR, PCI and ISO 27001.

The course ends with an MSc project in computer science, allowing you to investigate an area of computing or cybersecurity in depth while applying research and professional development skills.

Assessment

Assessment includes portfolios, coursework reports, presentations, project reports and project artefacts. You will also complete research methods assessments and practical cybersecurity activities and labs.

Entry requirements

A 2:2 undergraduate degree or above in any subject, or an equivalent qualification.

English language requirements

English language ability equivalent to IELTS 6.0 overall, with at least 5.5 in each component.

Careers

This course may support progression into roles such as cyber security analyst, network engineer, IT support, or governance and compliance security management. It may also be relevant to work in cybersecurity, computing and digital innovation.
