MSc Data Science

About this course
This MSc Data Science develops the mathematical, programming and analytical foundations used to work with complex data. You will study linear algebra, calculus, statistics and probability alongside Python programming and data handling techniques.
The course examines machine learning, artificial intelligence, deep learning and neural networks, including classification, clustering and predictive modelling. You will also consider how data can support operational and strategic decision-making in business contexts, while addressing ethical and legal constraints in data science.
You will work with Big Data and cloud computing concepts, including Hadoop, and use tools such as Jupyter Notebooks, Tableau, TensorFlow and Python libraries for analysis, visualisation and machine learning. The advanced computing project provides an opportunity to bring together these skills through research, design and implementation work.
Full-time blended study is available over one year. An online part-time option is available over one year or more.

You will study Python and Jupyter Notebooks, along with NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn, SciPy and Scikit-learn. Topics include data gathering, processing and analysis; dark data; Tableau-based visualisation; Hadoop; TensorFlow; and basic neural networks. Practical applications include data classification, clustering, predictive modelling and automated data-driven decision-making.

Assessment
Assessment includes portfolio submissions and an advanced computing research project, involving design and implementation work.
Entry requirements
Applicants typically need a 2:2 honours degree in a numerate subject with substantial mathematics-based study, such as mathematics, finance, computing, science or engineering.
An equivalent 2:2 honours degree may also be considered with 18 months of relevant computing work experience.
For non-standard entry, applicants typically need at least three years of relevant experience in a data-based role, including experience of mathematics and/or data analysis.
English language requirements
For online learning, applicants need IELTS 6.5 overall, with no component below 6.0; TOEFL iBT 90; or an equivalent qualification.
For blended learning, applicants need IELTS 6.0 overall, with no component below 5.5; TOEFL iBT 60–78; or an equivalent qualification.
Evidence of previous study taught in English may be accepted, including a letter confirming English as the medium of instruction.
Applicants who require a visa need IELTS 6.0 overall, with no component below 5.5, or an equivalent Secure English Language Test (SELT) result.
